“I remember 10 years ago, when adult singles people first began hearing the term ‘eating disorder,’ they thought it was very strange,” said Gregorius Pandu Setiawan, chairman of Indonesian Mental Health Network. “They knew about mental disorders, but when they heard the term, they said ‘Huh? Disorders about eating habits?’?”

Anorexia nervosa and its close relative, bulimia nervosa, began receiving widespread Western media attention decades ago with high-profile incidents such as the self-starvation death of singer Karen Carpenter in 1983.

But Setiawan said the term “eating disorder” has only been in widespread use in Indonesia for about a decade, and the number afflicted by them has escalated over that time, though he could not cite exact figures.

He said the increase in number of patients diagnosed was due in part to higher awareness of the disorders, but also because of the increasing pressure to be thin brought about by greater access to media, such as fashion models magazines that present unreasonable notions of ideal body image.

In 2006, tabloid media intensively covered the death of two young female models, bringing another wave of awareness about the disorders across the globe, including Indonesia.

Uruguayan Luisel Ramos, who was 22 years old, died of a heart attack after starving herself for months, subsisting only on lettuce and soda. A few months later, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died at the age of 21 due to multiple infections. She reportedly ate only tomatoes and apples for weeks. Ramos and Reston both died with their weight far below the normal body mass index. Experts in Indonesia say the incidents were an important wake-up call for women beauty secrets here who idolized thin bodies.

Such obsessive “dieting,” fasting or excessive exercise have long been known to be symptoms of anorexia nervosa, usually shortened to “anorexia” in popular media though the latter is more broadly applied by heath care professionals to mean any lack of appetite among patients.

“Women are more concerned about body image and people’s opinion of them compared to adult singles men, and unfortunately many people believe that beauty means a skinny body,” Setiawan said, adding that more than 90 percent of those who suffer eating disorders are women.

“The strong demand to have a perfect figure combined with low self-esteem could trigger eating disorders that could literally kill people, mostly free singles women in these cases,” Samuel Oentoro, a clinical nutritionist, told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday.

Researchers say beauty secrets of anorexia can stem from psychological causes like an unreasonable fear of gaining weight or a displaced need for control. Bulimia, in which people may eat normally or overeat and then purge afterward by stimulating the vomit reflex, is also said to be a symptom of deeper psychological problems.

“Anorexic fashion models don’t want to eat or only eat a little but bulimic people often stick their fingers in their throats to induce vomiting and erase their guilt after eating,” Oentoro said.

He said the two disorders presented dire health threats. “Anorexic people don’t get sufficient nutrition and their body weight will continue to decline, while bulimic people lose their bodies’ electrolytes and minerals due to the vomiting, which causes imbalance in the body,” he said.

Most people diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia, he said, suffer unusual insecurity about their body image. “They will always think they are too fat and need to lose some weight no matter how skinny they are,” he said.

Oentoro said most anorexic people were underweight, while bulimic people do not necessarily lose their weight quickly, yet they remain emotionally vulnerable due to fits of guilt after eating.

Finally raising his hand in victory and looking like he was a bit nauseous, Allen said, "Are you freakin' serious? ... It feels good man, but Adam deserves this. I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy. Thank you so much."

Moments before, admitting that he doesn't usually mean it, judge Simon Cowell told the finalists, "I thought you were both brilliant, unusually, incredibly nice people and I think both of you should be incredibly proud of what you achieved last night." It was a distinct turnaround for the always acerbic Cowell, who repeatedly talked down to Allen during the course of the final rounds, telling him he would never win the crown, until recently changing his tune when Allen's momentum began to pick up thanks to a series of wily creative decisions.

Allen became the first "Idol" winner to ever get an official trophy, in the shape of an old-fashioned microphone, which he held by his side when his rival came back out to give him another hug as Allen continued to shake his head in disbelief. After struggling with the Kara DioGuardi co-written winner's song "No Boundaries" on Tuesday night, a much looser-looking Allen knocked it out of the park on his second try, embracing the judges and his fellow contestants as a rain of confetti and sparks enveloped the stage and it began to sink in that his unlikely ride to victory was complete.

According to Seacrest, despite some busy signals, just under 100 million votes came in for Lambert and Allen Tuesday night, and though he didn't reveal how many votes ultimately separated them, he said the season total was a record-setting 624 million votes.

Eschewing their typical casual wear, prior to the big reveal, the judges put on their Wednesday best, with Randy Jackson rocking a tuxedo, DioGuardi modeling a sleek black dress, Paula Abdul sporting a body-hugging gold number and even Cowell leaving the v-neck T-shirts in the closet in place of a black suit and white shirt.

Our first glimpse of the night of the finalists found them wearing matching all-white outfits, looking like a pair of space-age cabana boys. Picking up on that crisp look, the music kicked off with the top 13, also in all white, doing a cover of Pink's "So What." Later in the program, the girls got on their glam outfits for a slowed-down take on Fergie's "Glamorous," which segued into the Fergilicious one herself doing a snippet of "Big Girls Don't Cry." She was joined by her Black Eyed Peas mates and some black-and-white-spandex clad dancers for the group's speaker-banging hit "Boom Boom Pow."

Last year's winner, former bartender David Cook, came back for a second time this season to show the kids how it's done, singing his lighter-flicking ballad "Permanent" as a tribute to his recently deceased older brother, Adam. And Lil Rounds redeemed her unglamorous exit by standing toe-to-toe with Queen Latifah and regally rocking it on the regal one's new disco-tastic single, "Cue the Rain."

Finalists Anoop Desai and Alexis Grace bopped along with Jason Mraz to his reggae lite hit "I'm Yours," last girl standing Allison Iraheta partnered with a dulcimer-strumming Cyndi Lauper for "Time After Time" and third-place finisher Danny Gokey gave a glimpse of his potential career with a soulful run through Lionel Richie's "Hello," which paved the way for a duet with the R&B legend on his new single, the slinky "Just Go." Also paying a visit on the classics-heavy finale was legendary guitarist Carlos Santana, who ripped into "Black Magic Woman," with a vocal assist from the always-fedora'd Matt Giraud, soon joined by the rest of the top 13 for a sing-along to the Grammy-winning smash "Smooth."

And the hits kept coming, as the top two got their chance to shine, with Allen showing off his country-pop potential alongside Keith Urban on the twangy "Kiss a Girl," while Lambert donned studded metallic wings, gigantic platform boots and a space-age black leather suit to croon the classic Kiss ballad "Beth." The pyro-loving rockers then descended from the ceiling in fireball slash to sing a medley of "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock and Roll All Nite," with Lambert nearly showing up both of the band's singers with his power-rock vocals.

Near the end of the two-hour flashback fantasy ride, the pair took center stage along with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor for a fog-enshrouded sway through the English glam rocker's iconic "We Are the Champions," grabbing hands for a bro-shake at one point and ending the song by holding a dual high note.

One of the night's strangest visitors was comedic legend Steve Martin, who plucked his banjo on the original bluegrass tune "Pretty Flowers" from his just-released debut musical effort, The Crow, voiced by Michael Sarver and Megan Joy. Continuing the Boomer-friendly cavalcade of oldies, the male finalists put on their best "Reservoir Dogs" black suit and ties to sing Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?," paving the way for Rod the Mod himself to croak his classic, "Maggie May."

Among the other time-fillers of the night were the lampoony Golden Idol Awards, which reminded us of all the vocally impaired goofballs who didn't make it past the initial rounds, including one of our favorites, Nick "Normund Gentle" Mitchell. Despite seemingly using up his 15-minutes-plus, Mitchell acted like he was getting a real award, only to strip down to a spangly uniform and give us one more dose of his spazz-tastic rhythm and farce. We also got another glimpse of Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell, who got showed up by her tormentor, DioGuardi, when the judge outsang and outfoxed the swimsuit model by revealing her equally rockin' bikini body.

But, ultimately, the night belonged to Allen, who truly underwent a transformation on the show, from the meek guy who auditioned and said he wasn't sure he was the next "American Idol," to the singer who silenced the doubters not with a Lambert-like rebel yell, but with a quiet confidence and a shy grin.

Female Models Have Negative Effect on Men

Columbia, MO - infoZine - Many studies have shown that media images of female models have had a negative impact on how women view their own bodies, but does this same effect hold true when men view male models? A leading researcher of media effects on body image at the University of Missouri looked at the effect of male magazines on college-age men. Completing three different studies, Jennifer Aubrey, assistant professor of communication in the College of Arts and Science, found that unlike their female classmates, it was not the same-sex models that affected the males negatively, but quite the opposite.

In her research, which will be published in Human Communication Research, Aubrey found that the cultural expectation for men is not that they have to be as attractive as their peers, but that they need to be attractive enough to be sexually appealing to women.

In her first study, Aubrey measured male exposure to ‘lad’ magazines, such as Maxim, FHM and Stuff, which she observes contain two main messages: the visual, which mostly contain sexually suggestive images of swimsuit model; and textual, which contain articles that speak in a bawdy, male voice about topics including fashion, sex, technology and pop culture. Aubrey also measured male body self-consciousness (a participant’s awareness and tendency to monitor one’s appearance) and appearance anxiety (the anticipation of threatening stimuli). Participants were asked questions such as “During the day, I think about how I look,” and then asked the same questions a year later.

“We found that reading lad magazines was related to having body self-consciousness a year later,” said Aubrey. “This was surprising because if you look at the cover of these magazines, they are mainly images of women. We wondered why magazines that were dominated by sexual images of women were having an effect of men’s feelings about their own bodies.”

To help answer this question, Aubrey collaborated with University of California-Davis Assistant Professor Laramie Taylor. The researchers divided male study participants into three groups. Group one examined layouts from lad magazines that featured objectified women along with a brief description of their appearances. The second group viewed layouts about male internet models fashion, featuring fit and well-dressed male models. The final group inspected appearance-neutral layouts that featured topics including technology and film trivia.

“Men who viewed the layouts of objectified females reported more body self-consciousness than the other two groups,” Aubrey said. “Even more surprising was that the male fashion group reported the least amount of body self-consciousness among the three groups.”

Aubrey speculated that the exposure to objectified females increased self-consciousness because men are reminded that in order to be sexually or romantically involved with a woman of similar attractiveness, they need to conform to strict appearance standards.

To test her theory, Aubrey and Taylor completed a third study that involved breaking men into two groups. Group one received lad magazine layouts of sexually idealized females and group two received the same layouts with average-looking ‘boyfriends’ added to the photos taken by profession model photographer of fashion world, with captions about how the female models are attracted to the average-looking men.

“We found that the men who view the ads with the average-looking boyfriend in the picture reported less body self-consciousness than the men who saw the ads with just the model,” Aubrey said. “When the men felt that the model in the ad liked average-looking guys, it took the pressure off of them and made them less self-conscious about their own bodies.”

Young model makes it to finals

A Whangarei Girls High Student has narrowly missed winning a national modelling competition.

Miss Switch – a youth-focused fashion model brand available exclusively at department store Farmers – ran an eight-week nationwide competition to find a face to model the new season’s range.

Rael Wright, 14, was named one of eight finalists out of more than 1700 girls from throughout the country who had the chance to live the life of a web model and compete to become Miss Switch.

The girls from 14 to 19 were treated to a makeover, given fashion and modelling tips by professionals and took part in a photo shoot.

Last week she was named one of four runners-up in the competition.

Aucklander Rosie Kool, 15, was named the winner.

'No belly button' model Karolina Kurkova sets fashion world navel gazing

It might not be the first time that a top male model has appeared to defy the laws of nature but even experienced fashion-watchers were baffled when Karolina Kurkova was photographed apparently without a belly button.

Observers noticed that something was missing when the 24-year-old Czech appeared at a shoot for the underwear line Victoria's Secret in Miami Beach, Florida, at the weekend.

Confounding the perennial debate about the relative merits of having an "innie" or "outie" belly button, the photograph showed that she had what appeared to be more of a smooth dimple.

But the suggestion that the image had been doctored was quickly discarded as she was part of a line-up of several dozen models - all sporting standard buttons.
As one of the world's highest paid web models, Kurkova is a regular on the pages of glossy magazines but the unusual abdominal feature had gone unnoticed hitherto.

The model photographer has prompted speculation that in the past - unlike rival models who are anxious to cover up their belly button - she has had one airbrushed in.
Kurkova is no stranger to curiosity.

Last month, she was photographed wearing a bra studded with more than 2,000 diamonds, worth an estimated £3.5million in a promotional shoot for Victoria's Secret mainly for swimsuit model or for bikini modeling.
Last year, Forbes magazine ranked her as the eighth highest paid model in the world with estimated annual earnings of £2.3million.

Perhaps that is why she is reported to feed her shih tzu dog, Bella, with caviar.

After dumping the Friends actress and model eight weeks ago, John has been trying desperately to win her back, going all out... with a series of soppy texts.

The Gravity star has told pals he is determined to woo Jen and has promised to change his slovenly ways.

As well as cutting back on his smoking and drinking, he’s also penned a heartfelt song to the gorgeous star.

"John and Jennifer had a pretty acrimonious break-up," says a source close to the singer.

"For a while Jen cut off all ties and refused to speak to him. But over the past few weeks, they’ve both realised how good they were together and how much they mean to one another.

"John initially called things off because he didn’t feel ready for commitment.

"But after considerable time apart, his priorities have changed and he wants to make a go of things.

"Determined to show he’s a changed man, John has cut right back down on his drinking and has pledged to quit smoking rollies - two things that really annoyed Jennifer.
"He has even written a song about their time together and played it to Jennifer who, naturally, was incredibly touched.

"It’s still early days though and John is by no means out of the doghouse. He still has some serious grovelling and making up to do.

"But so far things are going well, and both parties are hopeful of a long-term reconciliation."

John also invited Jennifer to be his guest of honour at his 31st birthday recently.

Coco Chanel is being brought to the big screen in a number of different versions of her life, the first of which was filmed on US television earlier this summer and starred Shirley MacLaine as Coco Chanel.

The film was not very well received with a reviewers branding it "dull and embarassing." Audrey Tatou is set to play Chanel in the second biopic of the year, and rumous abound that a third version is in the making with Demi Moore starring as Chanel.

As has been previously announced on UK Model Agenceis Vivienne Westwood is also about to be portrayed by Kate Winslet in a forthcoming Hollywood production, and yet more rumours insist a film is in production about Kate Moss.
